Get a flavour of machine learning
This holiday season is a fine time to be thinking about food, flavours, and fragrances – and that’s exactly what we’re doing at Intellegens. Formulation development in these industries is a key focus for our machine learning technology, and one we’re looking forward to discussing further in the New Year. This starts with a webinar hosted by the British Society of Flavourists, where Intellegens will be talking about machine learning for flavour science. You can also download an information pack on this topic at our website.
Recorded webinar: Materials development
In case you missed this month’s webinar on machine learning for materials development, the recording is now available. The session included a great case study presentation from Mario Cordero of Welding Alloys Group. This detailed a project in which ML found an improved, cost-effective, and more environmentally-friendly hardfacing material.
White paper: Machine learning for Materials
A new Intellegens white paper is available on machine learning for materials design and development. We discuss the strategic importance of materials R&D, some of its key challenges, and how machine learning can help. We explore the difficulties of applying ML in this sector and how these can be overcome, and we share case study examples in steels, aerospace alloys, additive manufacturing, and composites.
JTI and Intellegens model toxicology data
Researchers from JTI and Intellegens have published a new machine learning study of toxicology in the Journal of Chemical Information and Modeling. Analysing experimental datasets to understand and enable control of the toxicological properties of chemicals is a key task for R&D teams developing chemicals and formulations in areas such as life sciences, fast moving consumer goods, and foods and beverages. The performance of imputation-based machine learning methods was compared to well-established ML-based QSAR methods, finding a significant improvement in the quality of results.
Revved-up analytics for large datasets
One of the new features in last month’s Alchemite™ 2023 Autumn Release was improved analytics for large datasets. An example is the importance chart, which can now be filtered to identify the most significant relationships. In the example above, the chart is a ‘heat map’ that shows which factors in a biopharmaceutical formulation have the greatest impact on key properties such as its activity. The full dataset contains over 300 inputs, but the new Alchemite™ tools make it simple to focus in on those that matter most.
Blog – making heavy industry light on its feet
One interesting point made in our recent webinar was that applications which are labelled ‘high tech’ – biotech, aerospace, additive manufacturing – get a lot of attention. And much of it is justified. But so-called ‘heavy industry‘, with its reliance on iron alloys and steels, continues to power much of the world economy. And research challenges in this area are equally fascinating and important. Machine learning is doing some interesting things here, as well.
Best wishes for 2024
It’s been a busy year here at Intellegens, with lots of fascinating new projects to work on and partners to work with. Thanks to everyone who has supported and collaborated with us this year. We wish the machine learning and R&D communities that we work with all the very best for 2024 – there is much work to be done! We’re developing our 2024 events schedule, and you can always find the latest plans on our website.
