Title: Case studies – Designing new and more sustainable materials with machine learning
Presenter: Dr Tom Whitehead
Session: Revolutionising Material R&D: The Impact of AI and Machine Learning on Material Innovation
Location: Theatre C
Date/time: May 16, 2024 / 11.30-12.30
Abstract:
Developing new materials with improved performance is already a complex, multi-parameter optimisation problem. The increasing need to meet sustainability and net zero targets makes this task yet more challenging. Machine learning (ML) can help, extracting added value from all available data to propose new designs and processing options, and to guide experimental programmes. This talk will introduce ML for materials design and development and detail case studies in alloys, plastics, composites, and ceramics. These projects have delivered improved physical and environmental properties, while cutting experimental workloads by 50-80%. The talk will also discuss technologies for coupling ML with other data processing and modelling techniques, enabling its integration with materials simulation methods and its application to data types including microstructure images, time series, and chemical structures.
