Surface Coatings International magazine has published an extended review article by Intellegens Science Team lead Tom Whitehead discussing the application of machine learning to coatings, inks, and adhesives.
The Jan/Feb 2024 edition of the magazine, published by The Oil & Colour Chemists Association reviews the use of machine learning to optimise formulations and design effective experiments.
Tom discusses how the development of formulations for coatings, inks, and adhesives is an application that is very well-positioned for machine learning solutions. The problem can typically be summarised as optimising a recipe: combining ingredients in different proportions and applying processing conditions (perhaps different stirring rates or curing conditions) to obtain the desired properties. The number of potential combinations of ingredients and processes can be astronomical: it is not unusual to have hundreds, sometimes even thousands of possibilities. Here, machine learning can complement intuition and experience, making it feasible to explore this enormous design space. The article shows how machine learning has been successfully applied in the area, including case study examples.
