How long have you been working at Intellegens and what is your position?
I joined Intellegens in July (2021) and I’m working as a Materials Research Scientist. Primarily, my role is solving customer problems using data science techniques and the Alchemite™ deep learning engine. I’m also interested in researching avenues to advance the underlying technology, as well as writing publications on the application of Alchemite™ to solve real world problems.
What is your favourite part about working at Intellegens?
What really excites me is being able to apply machine learning and data science to real world problems. I just finished my first project and it was great to see the customer excitement as I unveiled our findings! Its also really nice to work with smart, driven, and friendly people, as that kind of environment is a driver for innovation!
What is your career/education background?
I am a Chartered Engineer by trade and a professionally registered member of the Institute of Materials, Minerals, and Mining (MIMMM). I finished a thoroughly enjoyable metallurgy and material science PhD programme at Leicester University in June 2021. It was sponsored by Rolls-Royce and the main outcome of my research was the creation of a novel supervised machine learning algorithm, where I developed a technique to improve the understanding of defect formation in some of their most critical jet-engine components. What really interested me about Intellegens was that it was founded as a direct result of a materials science and machine learning collaboration with Rolls-Royce. Needless to say, I felt Intellegens was a perfect fit for me!
What is something that you think makes Intellegens stand out from other companies?
I really believe in their vision. They have a strong academic history and their underlying machine learning technology has been proven time and time again. It feels really exciting to be able to work in an area so closely related to my PhD and translate some of that intuition and practical knowledge into real world value and tangible impact so soon after finishing my studies!
What does a perfect day look like to you?
Nice early start and a strong coffee to wake up! I like to set myself small targets and I try to achieve little goals before lunchtime. I always try to do some form of exercise every day, such as football, powerlifting, or yoga. In the evenings I like to ‘relax and unwind’ with a wine (although not every day!), and some competitive gaming with my friends!
